Martingale: the progression and its limits
Understand why doubling the stake does not remove the house edge.
How the progression grows
The idea is to double after a loss on an even-money bet. Starting with 1 unit, six consecutive losses cost 1 + 2 + 4 + 8 + 16 + 32 = 63 units. The next stake would be 64 units.
Balance and table limit
Available funds and table limits interrupt the progression. A losing streak can require a stake far larger than the profit originally intended.
The mathematics do not change
The progression changes stake sizes and the distribution of outcomes, but not each round’s probability or the house edge. It is not a profit guarantee or a solution for recovering losses.
Probabilities calculated from 37 or 38 equally likely outcomes, depending on the variant. Check the table rules.
